Crooked Lawyer Selected by Selected WH Resident to Cover Ass On Treason Investigation
Maybe Bush Needs A New Lawyer?
The White House for the first time yesterday acknowledged that President Bush has consulted with lawyer James Sharp in conjunction with the federal investigation into the White House leak of a CIA operative's name last year. The move is the "first indication that the probe could extend beyond White House staff to the highest levels." Bush has repeatedly claimed that he wants find out the "senior administration official" who was responsible for the leak to Robert Novak in an alleged attempt to discredit former Ambassador Joe Wilson. But there is reason to doubt his sincerity. He has refused to ask his staff members "to sign affidavits denying involvement." And last October, he said, "I don't know if we're going to find out the senior administration official" because "this is a large administration, and there's a lot of senior officials" – an implicit sign that failure was a potential and acceptable outcome of the investigation. Now, as the federal probe moves forward, there is a new question: why is the White House hiding information about the president's lawyer?
BUSH ATTORNEY REPRESENTED CONVICTED IRAN-CONTRA FIGURE:
The NYT reports the same James Sharp who is consulting with the president represented Retired Maj. Gen. Richard V. Secord in the Iran-Contra scandal. According to the 5/23/89 LA Times, Secord was charged with "felony charges that he lied to the congressional Iran-Contra committees when he swore that he did not expect to profit from secret arms sales directed by Oliver L. North."
WHO IS JAMES E. SHARP?:
Attempts by the media "to reach Sharp, an Oklahoma native and former assistant U.S. attorney who has built a low-profile white-collar defense practice in Washington, were unsuccessful." The White House is being so secretive it actually refuses to confirm whether this is the same "James E. Sharp" consulting with the President.
JAMES E. SHARP ACCUSED OF SUBORNING PERJURY:
The Progress Report did its own unofficial search in an effort to uncover more details about the lawyer for the president. A search of the DC Bar website lists a James E. Sharp as an active member. A search of court documents shows an attorney named James E. Sharp represented his "good friend" Joe Harry Pegg who was indicted as "one of several individuals who conspired to import marijuana into the United States in 1988 and 1989." During James E. Sharp's representation of Pegg, one of Pegg's alleged co-conspirators said Sharp "helped him concoct a false story to help exculpate Pegg." After sentencing, Pegg appealed his conviction on the ground that "his attorney had a conflict of interest that deprived him of his constitutional right to effective assistance of counsel." The 11th Circuit decision in the case reports that the government did "not deny that Sharp labored under an actual conflict of interest."
