"Time to Reasess Course" (Cuban American Speaks Up)
I am a 55-year-old Cuban-American and Fortune 100 senior executive. I came to this country 44 years ago as an 11-year-old. My parents sent me here to preserve my freedom and protect me from the totalitarian darkness enveloping Cuba. I will forever be grateful for their courage in sending me away, and for the values they instilled in me -- values of family, God and country, which have guided me and filled me with pride as I traveled all around the world as an American citizen.
For the last 30 years I have been a registered Republican and felt at ease with fiscal conservatism, a less intrusive government, a strong military, the confidence that anything was possible in America and that we were indeed the beacon of freedom for all the world to see. I felt strongly that in this administration I would finally see the end of Castro's reign of terror and a constructive outreach to the Latin American nations plagued with poverty.
I voted for George W. Bush in 2000 with all of these expectations in mind, in addition to addressing the deteriorating quality of life in the U.S. in terms of creating quality jobs, improving education, health care, urban infrastructure and ecological improvements to our delicate environment.When the 9-11 attack took place, I strongly supported President Bush in defending our homeland by going after the terrorists in Afghanistan. As a result, I understood the president's singular focus in making us safe at home.
The world was united with us on the war on terror.But then came Iraq and our pre-emptive invasion on the grounds of a clear and present danger to the security of the United States.
Ever since, and in light of the revelations that have now surfaced, the situation is not what we were led to believe -- much to our detriment.
